CASTLEFORD 91s –v- SHEFFIELD 91s

2 July 2007

1st quarter

Elliot won the ball from the drop which led to Luke getting a chance before he was tackled. Castleford went straight down to the opposite end and scored, Ripley had no chance. Elliot had a chance from Sheffield’s restart and almost scored but again Castleford counter attacked and scored making it 2-0. Good build up play by Sheffield almost led to Eleanor.G. scoring but to no reward. Jeremy was sent out for over aggressive play which resulted in Castleford scoring again. Despite good defending from Danny and a great save from Ripley, Castleford fumbled the ball into the net to finish the quarter 4-0.

2nd quarter

Castleford won the drop ball and swam towards goal but were foiled by Sheffield. A shot by Castleford flew just over crossbar after careless play by Sheffield. Castleford went onto score five goals in relatively quick succession finishing this disappointing quarter 9-0 – Sheffield had to score soon.

3rd quarter

Danny won the drop ball but Castleford grabbed another goal 2 minutes in making it 10-0. Eleanor.G. scored in Castleford’s top corner, to much applause from the Sheffield supporters – the scoreline was now 10 – 1 to Castleford. Unfortunately Castleford followed it up with another three goals to end this quarter 13-1.

4th quarter

Castleford grabbed the ball from the drop but Castleford won the tackle and went onto score. Another long range shot from Castleford went passed Ripley. Elliot then scored bottom corner making it 15-2 but poor marking from Sheffield resulted in another goal from Castleford. Elliot then lobbed Castleford’s keeper to make it 16-3 and finally Eleanor.G scored another consolation goal for Sheffield.

The game finished 16 – 4 to Castleford.

Joe Glover (Injured)

City of Sheffield 91’s vs Doncaster 91’s

A near capacity crowd packed into the Ponds Forge Aqua Dome to witness an enthralling Wakefield and District match on Sunday night. Tensions ran high in a pulsating first quarter as both teams maintained a ferocious tempo. CoS produced the most shots but failed to capitalize on their opportunities. 2 goals from Captain Kelly saw them share the honours after 8 frantic minutes.

A canny team talk from veteran coaches Kelly and Gaywood (aka Batman and Robin) saw a more measured approach from the CoS team in the second period. An excellent long shot from Eleanor Rossario and a Danny Hall bullet saw us take the lead. This was extended when Amy Sykes and young Kelly finished off a couple of first class team moves. Doncaster, with only a bare 7 players, continued to pose a threat, particularly from long shots. Jenny Armstrong stood up bravely to these using her long reach and quick reflexes to keep them at bay whilst Lizzie Selvey, Heather Hall and Eleanor Gaywood worked tirelessly in defence and attack.

Disappointingly the home team failed to capitalize on their lead and superior squad size, and as a result of some sloppy passing allowed Doncaster back into the game. Although Luke Elliot fought hard in the pit, managing to score one first class goal, possession was squandered too easily by both teams. Consequently the game ebbed and flowed frenetically, posing huge problems for the novice team of scorers and timekeepers as they tried to keep track of proceedings! By the end of the third quarter messrs Gaywood (senior), Gaywood (most junior) and mothers Selvey and Austin were as breathless as the players and the 9-9 score line meant more excitement was still to come.

Surely the Doncaster team would tire in the fourth period? Surely the CoS passing would sharpen up? Surely the ever present threat of the outstanding Doncaster number 2 would be nullified by some astute defensive play? Alas, it was not to be and Doncaster surged to a 13 – 10 lead with only 2 minutes and thirty seconds remaining. What were the squad made of? Would the tough get going when the going got tough? The coaches kept their cool and came up with the cunning strategy of shouting loud and giving withering glares to the players. This worked and whilst Jenny Armstrong continued to put up a wall of steel across the goal the outfield players rose magnificently to the challenge. Possession was retained, shots were accurate and well chosen, Doncaster were pressured into mistakes and CoS surged forward menacingly time after time. Austin, Glover, Kearsey, Danny Hall and Kelly junior scored crucial goals at the death which resulted in a narrow 15 – 13 triumph for Sheffield.

Well done to everyone concerned, including the heroic Doncaster 7. It was great to see such fighting spirit from everyone in the CoS squad and to see such strength of charater. Keep up the good work. Many thanks to Martin for coaching, to Linzi for helping him, to Denry for refereeing and to Alex, Claire and Eileen on the table. I can’t wait for the next game although I will be wearing ear plugs if I am sat any where near any over excitable mothers!

Elliot scored another blinding shot into the top corner. 8-6.

Throughout this quarter and the whole half Elizabeth Selvey and the team worked hard in defense by leaning in and pushing off.

A 2 on 1 in front of the goal gives Sheffield a penalty and Elliot put it away. 14-12.

The power of Elliot’s penalty injured the keepers hand and he had to come out.

Sheffield working hard in attack and driving up forward unfortunately left two free Huddersfield players which gave them two late goals to draw the match. 14-14.

Both teams deserve a lot of credit and Huddersfield come back after being behind almost the whole match leaving a lot of people on the edge of our seats.

In the second quarter Alex Gaywood went in goal and despite Castleford scoring a goal the quarter finished 11-1 to Sheffield.

Joe Grover took over as goalie in the last quarter of the game and although Castleford did not add to their total, they put up a valid effort. However, Sheffield were just too strong on the day and finished the match with a fantastic 24-3 scorline and great all-round performances from the whole team.
